We really get excited about Fridays. That is the time we unwind by hanging out with friends, eating and drinking. We always get a great relief from the previous strenuous week days. It is good to relax and free your self from a lot of stress but at the same don't indulge in activities that could jeopardize your health.
I encountered a case of driving under the influence of alcohol in one of my calls. This patient was brought in unconscious and all alone. History gotten from the security personnels that brought him to the hospital showed that he lost consciousness and had an accident. The accident was a mild one because he just hit the side of the car on a concrete block on the road.
As soon as he was dropped on the couch, the smell of alcohol was perceived. An attempt was made to call some one from his contact on his phone. We started resuscitating the patient while trying to get across to someone on his contact. The blood pressure and blood glucose level were all normal.
We confirmed our diagnosis when the wife got to the hospital and told us that the husband told her that he will be going for a party that night.
Complications of alcohol intoxication are as follows;
- Inhalation of vomitus which could lead to asphyxation
- Severe dehaydration
- Seizures
- Hypoglycemia( low blood glucose)
- Trauma/ Road traffic accident which could lead to manslaughter or killing of oneself
- Coma
When ever you are going to a party please do bear in mind the following:
- Please when at a party don't drink in excess
- Do not mix drinks
- Always eat, do not drink under starvation
- Go with a friend who does not drink so that he can bring you back home
- Always be disciplined when at a party do not exceed the quantity you can handle.
- Please do not try new drinks at such times. If you are not with friends that can take you back home, that is not a good time to start trying new drinks that you are not familiar with.
Thanks for visiting.
