Is committing suicide the answer to our problems?

Image result for pictures of attempted suicide

On the couch of A nd E laid a girl of about 18 years old and had little body movement, her mouth was smeared with an oily substance. Then I asked the casualty officer what was wrong with the patient.He replied by saying failed suicide attempt.
I couldn't get adequate history from the patient because she was still unconscious and the person that brought her didn't want to give out any information concerning her. All I gathered was that she is a house help and took insecticide
That was not my first case of suicide attempts. I have seen cases of girls trying to jump from building just because she found out she was pregnant and at the same time her boy friend jilted her, cases of maltreatment from employers for those of them that are house helps etc

Suicide attempt is when a person tries to commit suicide but survives. It can also be called failed suicide attempt or non fatal suicide attempt.

There are different methods used by patients and they include the following;

  • Hanging
  • Wrist slashing
  • Self poisoning e.g rat poisons, drug overdose,ingestion of corrosive agents, insecticide etc
  • Use of firearms
  • Jumping from a height
 What could make one commit suicide ;

  • Failure in life
  • Unwanted pregnancy
  • Broken relationship
  • Physical abuse in marriages
  • Bullying at school
  • Maltreatment by guardian/employers etc
All these lead to depression, which then leads to suicide attempt .
I would like to advice that when you bring a house help always try to know what her plans are and try to reach a contract concerning her stay with you and always treat them well. Teenagers are very difficult to handle as they grow, continue to talk to them and also be close to them
Look out for bullying signs especially at school in your children .
Seek for a counsellor when you are depressed.
There are complications for survivors of failed suicide attempt and they include the following;

  • Organ failure especially the liver . This is seen in cases of drug overdose
  • Brain damage is seen in hanging
  • Damage to the spine is seen in people who jumped from a height.
Like the saying goes'' A problem shared is a problem half solved''. Do not bottle up your problems always seek help. You will be surprised to see what relief you will get , the support and possible solutions to your problems.
Stay healthy guys . Thanks for visiting.
