A lot of people celebrate their birthdays yearly and remember to put it up on facebook and other social media platforms where people send in birthday wishes to them, upload pictures of the birthday celebrations on different social media platforms where they get very nice comments. Some of us are not aware that there are some medical tests that we should do yearly just as we celebrate our birthdays.
There are medical tests that we need to carry out yearly once we attain a certain age, most especially if you are predisposed to having such a disease, if you are of a certain gender, if there is history of such diseases in the family.
I recommend we all do the following tests/examinations yearly
- Blood glucose
- Lipid profile
- PSA (prostate specific antigen) in males
- Pap smear for cervical screening in females
- Breast Screening in females
- BMI (Body mass index)
I have seen several cases at the ER( emergency room) of young patients brought in unconscious and when the blood sugar or blood pressure is checked is quite high and further tests could reveal kidney damages or to other organs. I recommend we check all these tests especially if you have parents or siblings with diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart diseases, breast cancers, cervical cancers, prostate cancers etc .
This will help detect early onset of such diseases, and avoid further complications.
Blood pressure is always a routine examination done whenever you visit the hospital and could also be checked when ever you walk into a clinic or hospital even if you are not sick.
If you are unaware of the health status of your parents take them to a hospital so that their blood pressure ,blood sugar and other tests could be done.
Breast self examination should be done routinely by females to detect breast lumps
Always consult your doctor for these, other tests you could also do and also for further clarifications.
Let these tests be your yearly birthday gifts you give to yourself in addition to the one that will circulate the social media.
Keep in mind that prevention is better than cure.
Always stay healthy people.
